ALEXANDRIA, VA. - ‘The men’ (borrowed from Mango Mike’s) waving the palm trees as guests entered were the first clue that this year’s Alexandria Chamber of Commerce’s Chairman Ball was going to be different. The pina coladas that were handed out to guests were the second clue.

With Mango Mike Anderson coming on board as the Chamber chair, the atmosphere was light and casual. Instead of drink tickets, guests were given Hawaiian leis to use to order drinks. Colorful tablecloths draped the tables and a steel band provided the entertainment. Floral arrangements, provided by Conklyns, included Bird of Paradise.

Civic and business leaders dressed as the members of Gilligan’s Island, while Edward Hart and Eric Nelson came dressed as an authentic tropical couple. Most of the other guests got into the casual attire as well, with Hawaiian shirts, shorts and brightly colored outfits.

The Big Island Luau featured tropical fruit salad; tomato-cucumber salad; baby green salad; Kahlua whole suckling pig; jerk chicken; coconut crusted Mahi Mahi; roasted root vegetables; fried plantains; Dona coffee crème caramel; and key lime pie.

There was a great assortment of silent auction items to bid on, as well as a raffle for two exciting trips. Guests got into the fun of playing Heads ‘n’ Tails and then Kerry Donnelly took over at auctioneer for the live auction.
