ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Virginia’s Paul Smedberg is the new chairman of Metro’s board of directors.

The board picked the former member of the Alexandria Council Thursday to replace Chairman Jack Evans, who is resigning following an ethics investigation.

The transit agency board “determines agency policy and provides oversight for the funding, operation, and expansion of transit facilities” in Metro’s service area, Metro says on its website. The board comprises two members each from D.C., Virginia, Maryland and the federal government.

The Metro Board is holding off on setting committee assignments until D.C. picks a permanent replacement for Evans. The new D.C. representative will be the board’s first vice chair; Maryland’s Michael Goldman will be the board’s second vice chair.

The board’s ethics committee also on Thursday suggested a number of reforms that could be taken up in the future to reduce the secrecy surrounding ethics investigations and lay out a standard of proof required to find a violation.
