ALEXANDRIA, VA. -  While local knitting stores have struggled this past year, with Alexandria’s Knit Happens closing its doors recently, Rejoice, local knitters: Local knitting shop fibre space has been named the 2010 Business of the Year by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce for its achievements over the past year.

The shop, which was also nominated for Best Small Business of the Year, opened in 2009 at 102 N. Fayette Street in Old Town and has already surpassed the expectations of owner Danielle Romanetti.

“Some people thought I was crazy to start fibre space in this economy,” Romanetti said.  “This award proves that when you pour your heart into it – and when there’s a real desire in the community for something, like this store – you can be successful.”

But by offering unique workshops, events and classes, fibre space has made a name for itself in the community.

“Fibre space has had major impact on middle King Street in Old Town – creating such a buzz about a product that most of us might not think of as a profitable venture – YARN!” said Mike Anderson, presenting the Business of the Year award at the U.S. Patent Office.  “Through her brilliant marketing efforts, [Romanetti] brings people from far and wide into our City not only to the benefit of her business – which is now a knitting empire – but also to those businesses around her.”

Fibre space is a full service knit and crochet shop that provides yarn, needles and notions as well as knit and crochet classes, parties and events. It is also a landing pad for busy professionals and families in the DC metro area who are seeking a creative outlet.

Accepting the award, Romanetti credited her four-person staff for making her dream of owning a successful shop a reality.  “I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said.
