ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Thanks to the nonprofit Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, a rare wetland property in Alexandria will be preserved.

In February, NVCT acquired a 1.97-acre wetland located where Cameron Run and Little Hunting Creek meet before flowing into the Potomac River. The site, an intact, rare tidal freshwater marsh, is also a migrating bird habitat, listed as an eBird "Hotspot" with more than 100 different bird species sighted in or near the area. The site includes the two only known, surviving Pumpkin Ash trees remaining in the City. The NVCT acquisition, made through a fee simple donation, will protect the wetland, which is located in a highly developed area between major freeways and an apartment building currently under construction.
