ALEXANDRIA, VA. - The nine-member Alexandria School Board six newcomers, two members who were re-elected and one member who served on the first elected Board from 1994-97 and was elected for a second term after a 15-year break. The approximately 150 people who witnessed last night’s installation ceremony and first called meeting got a glimpse into an interesting Board dynamic.
Alexandria Electoral Board Secretary read the results of the Nov. 6, 2012, School Board election and Circuit Court Judge Nolan Dawkins administered the oath of office. The T. C. Williams High School choir entertained the audience and the school’s ROTC drill team presented the colors and led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Morton Sherman called the Board meeting to order and asked for nominations for Board chairman. District A newcomer Karen Graf was the only name put in nomination. Marc Williams, who was first elected to the Board in a special election in 2008 and re-elected in 2009 and 2012, gave prepared remarks before the vote on Graf’s nomination was taken.
