ALEXANDRIA, VA. - More parking restrictions on certain residential blocks have taken effect in Old Town Alexandria. The change will affect visitors from outside the residential district looking to park near King Street or the waterfront.

Two-hour paid parking is now the norm in the 100 block of Duke Street and the 200 block of South Lee Street as part of the city's pilot program. Cars will need a District 1 residential parking permit to avoid paying the parking fee. The city has installed signs to notify drivers of the change.

The city had introduced similar restrictions over the summer in the 100 block of Prince Street, a historic cobblestone street.

The city council approved the restriction as part of a pilot program in November 2016. The program seeks to eliminate free two-hour parking spaces on residential blocks to improve parking options for residents. Meters will not be installed on the affected block.
