ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Guess who's hosting four fabulous children’s events in the month of January?  It must be the Verizon Center or the George Mason Patriot Center, right?

No, it’s Old Town’s own independent children’s bookstore, Hooray for Books!

Hooray to the owners, Ellen Klein and Trish Brown, who orchestrated such unique events to excite children of all ages.

The events will occur over three weekends this month, and will feature a popular toddler book character, a keepsake for all ages, a local author, and a popular local children’s band.

Attention parents of Olivia fans: if you missed photos with Santa in 2009 or your kids wouldn’t cooperate for the camera, here’s your chance for redemption.

On Saturday, January 9, from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm, the bookstore is hosting Olivia the costume character for stories about the famous pig, hugs to all who are interested, and most exciting, a photo opportunity with Olivia.

It might be fun to entice and occupy your kid(s) on the drive over about an Olivia book by asking them their thoughts on how Olivia might save the circus!  Once inside the bookstore, they might uncover the answer.  This event is best suited for toddlers through age seven.

On Saturday, January 16 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm, a bookstore regular Jennifer Stackpole with My Kissing Hands will be available to make an impression of your child’s hand or foot in soft clay, which is then kiln-fired and hand-finished to become a beautiful keepsake.

This has been a popular and fun-filled event for bookstore customers in the past.  For parents concerned about the time commitment, it only takes approximately 15 minutes to do the imprint and another five to ten minutes for paperwork.

The production of the keepsake takes from six to eight weeks.  This event is suitable for all ages, from two-week-old babies up.  Please call 703-548-4092 to make reservations.

The next day, January 17 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, Tod Steward’s book signing will certainly elicit a few hoorays from your older children who consider themselves too mature for Olivia.

What a thrill to meet and have your books signed by the Bristow, Va. author.  His first book, Painting Aalesund, was just released in Oct. 2009.  It is a novelette about ten-year-old Trond, who embarks on an adventure to bring color to Aalesund, his Norwegian seaside town.

Juliet’s Opera, his second book released this month, is a chapter book novelette about Eve Burke and her adventures on the ocean liner Queen Mary 2.

On her own, she attempts to reach a world she never even knew existed.  For parents with a maritime interest, this book contains a dramatic Queen Mary 2 painting by internationally known maritime artist Robert Lloyd.  The recommended age range for both books is eight to twelve years old.

The grand finale of hip hip hoorays, on Saturday, January 23 at 12:00 pm, features the incredibly popular Rocknoceros.

“We're excited to introduce a new dimension to our bookstore with the appearance and signing by local children's band Rocknoceros,”  said owner Trish Brown.

If you’ve been living under a “rock” for the last several years, Rocknoceros is a three-man band comprised of Northern Virginia natives.  Their recent CD PINK! is ranked ninth on National Public Radio’s 2009 Best Music For Kids and Their Families.
This past year, they performed at the 9:30 Club in D.C., so what a coup for Klein and Brown to be able to offer this intimate engagement to its customers.

The band will perform acoustically for approximately 20 minutes and then sign copies of their new CD.  All ages are encouraged to attend and wear their dancing shoes.

In addition to these incredible events, the bookstore has a plethora of additional storytimes.

Hooray for Books! is pleased to offer a 5% discount on Wednesdays in
January to those customers who cheer the following promo code:  “Hip Hip
