Christmas 2017: What's Open, Closed In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA. - As families get a break from work and school for the Christmas holiday, many services will be closed around the holiday. While everything is typically not open Christmas Day, many will be closed the day after as well.

City of Alexandria offices will be closed Monday, Dec. 25 and Tuesday, Dec. 26. Other services such as public transportation, historic sites and recreation centers will run on different schedules on the days surrounding Christmas.

Here are the openings/closings to be aware of around Christmas.

City Offices: Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Schools and Administrative Offices:
Closed Dec. 21-Jan. 2.

State Offices:
The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk's Office, the Alexandria Circuit Court, the Alexandria General District Court and the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (520 King St.) will close at noon on Friday, Dec. 22, and will reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 27. The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 2681 Mill Rd. will be closed Dec. 23-25.

Animal Shelter: Open for adoptions from noon to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day. The shelter will be open on Dec. 26 from 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. with animal visitation beginning at noon.

DASH and King Street Trolley: No DASH service on Christmas Day or after 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its normal schedule both days, every 10 to 15 minutes, between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River waterfront, from 10:30 a.m. to midnight. Emergency hotlines:
All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon on Friday, Dec. 22, and reopen Wednesday, Dec. 27. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed Dec. 25-26.

Historic sites: Closed Christmas Day. On Dec. 23, the Alexandria Black History Museum will close at 1 p.m. On Christmas Eve, Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open during their regular hours, from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. On Dec. 26, all city museums will be closed except The Lyceum and the Alexandria Archaeology Museum.For more information, visit the Office of Historic Alexandria's website.

Libraries: Closed Dec. 24-26.

Metrorail: On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Metrorail will open at 8 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule on both days, with off-peak fares in effect and free parking at Metro-operated lots and garages.

Parking: Police will suspect parking enforcement on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits. It does not apply to permit parking in any location normally prohibited (parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced. Regular parking enforcement will happen on Dec. 26.

Recreation and Arts Centers: Closed Dec. 24-25. On Dec. 26, all will remain closed with the exception of: the Chinquapin Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.; the Charles Houston Recreation Center from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and the Torpedo Factory from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Trash Pickup: Trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day the week of Dec. 25. The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collections Drop-off Center will be closed Christmas Day.
