ACT for Alexandria helps individuals become leaders in philanthropy by connecting them to innovative ways to get involved in solving the issues facing children, youth and families in Alexandria.

This philanthropic event featured toe tapping jams from the talented bluegrass band Over Under Down Yonder.

Guests like Councilman Frank Fannon, WJLA's Pamela Brown and Courtney Robinson, The Huffington Post's Stephanie Green, and artist Don Patron were able to stroll through the lovely gardens at the Lord Fairfax House at 607 Cameron, nosh on Delicious BBQ, and sip on beer and bubbly.

This spirited giving back came very close to raising its $15,000 goal and donations are still being accepted.  Chaired by Allison Erdle, Kathy Martin, and Brandi Yee the event is one of the more festive in the city and people are already buzzing and planning for the party next year.

The Host Committee included: Allison Priebe Brooks & Michael Brooks, Stephanie Clayton, Jennifer & Brent Desiderio, Allison & Garrett Erdle, Kendall Gartlan, Becca Haynie, Lizzie & David Hoover, Abigail Hopkins, Alison Jones, Remy Kauffmann, Carrie & Josh Keene, Stephanie & Trey Kirby, Chris Lewis, Holley Lupu, Kathy & Josh Martin, Lacey & Andrew Poliakoff, Sonia & Scott Price, Courtney Robinson, Hadley Stinson, Becca Thorsen, Robert Thorsen and Brandi Yee Race for the Cure 2010 on the National Mall Saturday morning marked the 27th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. I had the pleasure of serving as team captain for the Campagna Center's Junior Friends team.

The race had a hugely  wide demographic of men, women, and children from all walks of life  who poured onto the National mall.  Decked out in various shades of pink to show support for breast cancer research the mood was electric.  About 40,000 people descended upon D.C. and the National Mall to run and walked the race course to raise money for research.

With our nation’s Capitol Building as a backdrop, thousands of participants came together for an inspiring day on the National Mall, and our impact will be felt worldwide! The sun was shining as notable guests including Dr. Jill Biden and Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker sent participants on their way, led by breast cancer survivors.

Together, we raised more than $4.5 million to end breast cancer forever!   The Junior Friends fund raising efforts yielded close to $1,000 for the cause.

It was an especially proud moment for first time walker Laura Niswander, "The solidarity felt among all of the people walking was both humbling and inspiring.  I definitely plan to do the Race for the Cure again in the near future."
