ALEXANDRIA, VA. - With fresh funding from the Feds, things were popping with activity last week near Del Ray as the Arlandria Health Center celebrated National Health Center Week.
About 40 or so clients of Arlandria Health Center Neighborhood, Inc. used vouchers provided by the health center to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the Farmer’s Market, and scores more lined up for free dental screenings and wellness checks.
With thanks to Rep. Jim Moran (D-8), the acclaimed health center received Federal grants in excess of $270,000 earlier this year.

Clients of the health center enjoyed shopping at the market and hopefully will return on their own. Market vendors said they were very pleased with the increased traffic occasioned by voucher-carrying clients and wanted to know when this would be done again.
Jessica Ess, the health center's nutritionist, and Eduardo Mantilla, Project Connect staff, were there to answer questions and guide clients.
Several health center staff members, including Doris Rodriguez, Grace Alvarez, Ana Solis, Themy Gonzalez, Lineth Zurita, Jessica Sanchez, Naz Rahman, Maria Munoz and Pushkar, donned ANHSI t-shirts and walked from 2 East Glebe to the market near South Glebe. They were accompanied by significant others and their children; the children enjoyed exploring the nutritious market items.
Also in attendance were retired state Del. Marian Van Landingham and City Council member Del Pepper.
On Thursday, the health center held a Dental Screening Day for children two to 12 years of age in collaboration with the Colgate Mobile Screening Van.
This event was part of the health center's celebration of National Health Center Week and it was held in front of Arlandria Health Center's pediatric clinic.
A total of 31 children benefited from the dental screenings. The majority of the children had a positive outcome, in part due to the preventive care and fluoride treatment provided by our pediatricians during routine medical check-ups of children.
