ALEXANDRIA, VA. - The holiday season is a particularly hard time for families in need to celebrate or even make ends meet. An Alexandria woman is striving to make sure local families don't go hungry during the holidays, starting with Thanksgiving.

Kia Davis of NOVA Project Giveback wants to feed 500 families for Thanksgiving, Fox5DC reports. The nonprofit rallies every Thanksgiving to provide healthy food boxes to needy families.

The organization works with Alexandria city schools, churches and the Fairfax County Department of Family Services to identify families that could use the help. The food boxes can feed a family of four for two weeks and cost $70 each.

"No one should go without food at any given time of the year, but particularly Thanksgiving. It's that special time, it's the beginning of the season and we're trying to do our part," Davis told the news station.

Anyone can donate on the nonprofit's website. Another way to help is volunteering to prepare and deliver the food boxes Saturday, Nov. 18, less than a week before Thanksgiving. The volunteer event will be held in the Mount Vernon area at Gum Springs Community Center (8100 Fordson Road Alexandria).
