HUNTINGTON, VA. - Part of the efforts to revitalize the Richmond Highway corridor will come to fruition through the South Alex mixed-use development. The project is getting closer to beginning construction later this year with the announcement that Aldi will be the anchor grocery store.

Aldi has signed on after The Fresh Market backed out of plans to be the anchor store last year. Combined Properties Inc., the South Alex developer, is building 400 apartments and a 23,000-square-foot retail space at the North and South Kings Highway intersection, Washington Business Journal reports. The development will be in place of the now-demolished Penn Daw shopping center.

Nearby, a 350-apartment building will come to Kings Crossing, replacing a few businesses. The Board of Supervisors approved the apartment development in summer 2017. Amenities at the apartment building will include a dog spa, pool, business center, gym and bicycle repair room.

The German-based Aldi has also signed on to a Fair Lakes location and opened a number of stores recently in Northern Virginia. Its efforts to expand in the U.S. have brought over a dozen stores in Northern Virginia.
