The director of Writopia DC, Kathy Crutcher, said that programs like Writopia are essential. "There's a real need for programs like Writopia Lab to fill the gap sometimes left by school curricula that are focused on content mastery and standardized testing rather than creative and critical thinking."
The first reading are hosted at 904 King St, in Alexandria Va. The first reading was held last Thursday, where four students read fiction stories.
Crutcher says that Writopia helps youth to achieve their writing dreams while learning at the same time. " We're doing something special at Writopia--allowing kids to pursue their own writing passions while also learning craft--and it's working in a big way: our students win more national awards for creative writing in Scholastic's prestigious Art & Writing Awards event each year than does any other group of kids in the country."
Writopia DC is enrolling for the summer. Space is still available. Visit http://www.writopialab.org/writopia-washington-dc.html for workshop location and enroll information. Workshops will also be held during the school year.
