I started coming to Cameron Perks when I moved to Alexandria in 2006. When Dominique and James took over, I was amazed at the eclectic and vibrant change they infused into the coffee shop. I was actually happy that the original owners were gone...I had made a home for myself at the coffee shop and felt as if it were a gourmet bar you could walk into and "the staff knows your name". They both did a wonderful job with this place in a somewhat conservative community atmosphere. It wasn't until yesterday I found out about this tragedy by a friend, since I have been out of town. This was devastating to listen to and horrifying to assemble emotionally. I'm truly heart broken that this happened. These people were wonderful hosts to the Cameron Station Community and brought a lyrical tune to the everyday lives of the family's and the outside community that loved being a part of the magic it held as well. My heart goes out to Dominique and her family, as should the Cameron Station Community, which I am not a member of. I would hope more of the community would speak out and send their condolences. ****Dominique- Namaste, Love and Peace of Mind be Yours....

A forwarded message from Dominique Dunford: Thank you for an accurate reccount of this story. One small error, James and I have a daughter (2 yr. old). But that's small. There's a lot of drama that surrounds this story as you may know in uncovering some facts. But, James was more than just my business partner he was my life partner. We knew that. I love him and I am sure I would've loved him no matter what the outcome would've been. I chose life, I fought for it, I just wish he could've. But our daughter Delaney, will always love her "Poppa", I'll make sure of it. Thank you. Dominique Dunford

It breaks my heart. I have talked to Dominique several times and she was energetic and full of life. The Coffee house was great. GOD help both their families during this hard time.

You need to get your facts straight. How dare you try to surmise the cause of this tragedy.

The working middle class and entrepreneur needs to do just that, work. To attribute this attempted murder and suicide from the mental illness someone has to the poor economy is reckless and shortsighted. There is so much more to this that no one outside of their household would ever understand. By asking the second and third questions and not stopping at just the easy conclusions may behoove this on line "news" source. That may require taking a little extra time but worth it if the information is fact based. I am disappointed that this is “reporting.”

Very sad, this was my favorite place to have a cup of joe and work or read a book. So cozy. I hope we don't lose this gem for good.

Our hearts go out to Dominique, the children, and yes, James. We can attest to how stressful it is to run a small business, even in better times than these. I keep wondering why, with all the businesses closing in Old Town and beyond, the city of Alexandria isn't taking a far more proactive role in helping small businesses survive. We contribute mightily to the city's tax coffers and to its sense of "place". And please, everyone, support local independent businesses.

This is a tragedy and an awful blow to Alexandria and the West End in particular. But I wonder if the effort here to connect it with the slumping economy is a bit of stretch. Attempted murder and suicides are events that beg for logical explanations ... which they rarely produce. Surely it was a stress, but there must be something else going on here.
