About Vaso:
Prior to starting Vaso's Kitchen, Vaso Volioti worked in other local restaurants for 25 years. During this time she was constantly asked why she didn’t open her own place. “I was doing a bit of everything – hosting, waiting, cooking, preparing dishes”, Vaso said recently. She took her friend’s advice and opened Vaso's Kitchen. Her love of family and homeland is evident – John (her son) is managing, and many of her recipes come from her mother.

About Vaso’s Kitchen:
Vaso’s opened March 23rd, 2006 in the old Dixie Pig space on Powhatan Street. Vaso’s cuisine is influenced by her upbringing on Cyprus. The food is Greek & Italian, with a “home style” feel. The space is open and inviting, and outdoor seating is now available.

Business philosophy:
Vaso has worked to give Vaso’s Kitchen a friendly family atmosphere. She’s usually easy to spot, moving back and forth between the kitchen and front, talking to customers.  Vaso says, “I prepare familiar dishes with my own personal touch” I can attest to this – a hint of orange peel here, a sprinkle of cinnamon there – her dishes are old favorites, yet carry her distinctive touch.

Why did you choose to do this?
“People kept telling me to open a restaurant. I resisted, until I realized I needed to do something to keep my son nearby. I figured I start a restaurant and get him to manage it - that way I have him around every day!” (And it worked!)

Why Alexandria?
“I’ve been here for 40 years, and my 5 siblings are here as well!

Interesting Story?
Vaso’s sister and brother-in-law own Taverna Cretekou, a Greek restaurant on King Street. Also, check out Tom Sietsema’s article on Vaso’s here.
