Floral Designer Bridget Teter at The White House.

Done with a career in dentistry, over the economy and looking for some spare coin in her spare time, local yacht haven garden club guru and flower show judge Bridget Teter is taking advantage of her skills to boost her family budget with a unique small business, Bouquets by Bridget.

Like many area women, Bridget uses her special talents to the delight of friends and family.  An arrangement by Bridget brings a smile to the face of a sick friend or a neighbor hosting a little get together.  But as everyone cuts back on the little luxuries that carry big price tags, Bridget is finding a way to keep the beauty in area homes, businesses and special occasions all on a budget.

While large floral shops carry expensive inventories and loads of overhead, Bridget can keep costs low by doing a small trade with just enough advance planning.  If a customer knows their needs on a turnaround time of a couple of days, Bridget can deliver a comparable quality product to the high end floral trade or online giants without the fuss. Plus, without a staff Bridget can offer free delivery.

Bridget started her business with a personal touch servicing Alexandria brides in the late nineties.  From initial design to pinning on the boutonnieres, Bridget’s hands on approach built a sweet little business and the admiration happy couples.

This year, Bridget was honored by the Campagna Center as a designer for the exclusive Scottish Christmas Walk Designer Tour of Homes. The property at 504 Royal Street she decorated was transformed inside and out with an of the moment color palate including turquoise, silver and chocolate brown, marrying Old Town charm and modern sophistication, all while benefiting the community.

Now more than ever, as everyone is looking for value over brand name, at home based small businesses like Bouquets by Bridget stand to capture valuable customers and retail dollars. Just ask local entrepreneur Steve Niswander of Alexandria Buick Pontiac GMC, a regular client who uses Bouquets by Bridget to brighten his showroom, when he has the ability to use any full service florist in town.

Besides bridal orders, Bridget is seeing an increase in requests for small weekly standing orders and holiday arrangements.  For Easter, Bouquets by Bridget is offering custom arrangements including lilies, hydrangea and dutch tulips for tables and hostess gifts from $25 to $75, including container.

Bridget shares, “it is wonderful to finally find in my life something I love to do and actually get paid for it.  My arrangements are individual expressions of my creativity and enduring love of flora and fauna. I feel great when someone is touched by my work. Their referrals are the highest form of flattery.”
