ALEXANDRIA, VA. - March Madness has hit Alexandria in fun and fantastic ways.

St. Patrick’s Day was a ball and Alexandrians were out and about all over town from the Belle Haven community parade to the huge potluck and community fundraiser at St. Aidan’s Church.

Fort Hunt residents traded an Irish pot of gold for a good old-fashioned neighborhood potluck as they poured into the parish hall at St. Aidan’s.

It was time to kick up our heels for a rock-n-roll concert featuring popular local band,  Black Moon Tonic.  Close to $1,000 was raised for the church’s outreach and facility needs.  Children and those young at heart danced up a storm as our favorite - the cowbell - clanked in another St. Patrick’s Day.

Residents in Stratford Landing and Fort Hunt also came out to Stratford Landing Elementary for the annual Spring Fling, Ice Cream Social and Silent Auction.

With all of the heavy cutbacks hitting Fairfax County Public Schools it is wonderful to see the community rally around one of its elementary schools.

“We are thrilled with the support we received this year – prelim numbers show we raised close to $34,000 – which is the highest number ever,” exclaimed PTA volunteer chairwoman - Mara Stengler.

The PTA fundraiser will allow money to go towards Smart Boards, buses for field trips, and after school programs.

“Fun”draising was also taking place in Old Town at St. Mary’s March Mania Auction to benefit the 142 year-old Catholic school.

Guests were asked to come in casual attire or to represent a college team favorite as games played on giant screens.  The men watched a little B-ball while the women bid on the over 200 items up for silent auction.

Co-chairs Nancy Giblin and Laura Rizzo were delighted with their vision coming to life in the school gym, “We have flags, pennants, and jerseys from schools all over the country.  This March Mania theme goes right along with March Madness and everyone seems to be having  a great time.”

Tens of thousands were raised to benefit The St. Mary’s HSA and buy important items for the private school which serves over 700 children.

Serving the children of Alexandria on a regular basis –The Junior Friends of The Campagna Center gathered at the home of yours truly – affectionately known as “The Hive.”

We wanted to celebrate the 40-plus new member class with the board members of the Junior Friends.  I serve on the board as social chair and was delighted to open my home to these fantastic women.  The Junior Friends have two exciting events coming up.

The Day of Service is on April 17th, followed by a lunch at The Hard Times Café.  Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Emily Passmore at emily.passmore@gmail.com.

The BIG fundraiser for Spring – The 11th Annual Toast to Fashion - will be held May 6th at Belle Haven Country Club.  Stores from Old Town Boutique District will be featured on the runway and in the specialty on-site shopping at BHCC.

This fundraiser is open to the public and is an annual favorite – for details visit http://www.campagnacenter.org/en/84/default.aspx

Folks around town are buzzing as they prepare for Spring Break , The Final Four and the Easter Holiday.  Take time to relax, smell the flowers, and think of ways to give back to our community.
