Wine Alexandria Virginia
By Sister The Vino Vixen™
Hey wine-OH - God wants you to enjoy wine
I could argue that your love and appreciation of wine is Divine intervention. That God, himself introduced the pleasure of good wine to our ancient ancestors 6500 years ago and has made that wine pleasure integral to our humanistic make-up today. Yes. I could argue all that - if I had a shred of theological basis whatsoever to support it. And I don’t. But, I still believe it and here’s why.
Last year, the Discovery Channel reported that 2,460 grape seeds and 300 empty grape skins were found in ancient Macedonia dating to 5500 BC. If you’re a little like me and not too clear on your Ancient Civilization History, I’ll let you borrow my Cliff Notes. 5500 BC marks the Neolithic Age: - This is the period just after the Stone Age (as in knuckle dragging caveman days – sorry Geico guys).
- During this age that the first known cities of civilization were built on Mesopotamia.
- This age is still pre-historic, no written texts yet exist.
- During this age that transitioned from “hunter/gatherer” to planting and raising their food.
So, here is where I make my theological leap that wine is Divine and God is smiling with us every time we sip a lovely glass of wine. Review of 5500 BC - man is becoming “civilized” - learning to plant crops, keep animals, live in village societies, using fancy polished stone tools and making homes with mud. They don’t even have written language at this time.
Suddenly, they start making wine in Macedonia during this time. Barely able to plant simple food crops, but brilliant and advanced enough to crush grapes, ferment the juice and produce the worlds first known wine. Divine Intervention? Perhaps. Consider this, the Bible writes that during this period is the beginning of Man.
And that is Wine Theology According to The Vino Vixen. And Why We Should Embrace our God-Given Wine-Oh. (And why I won’t feel guilty about sipping a glass of wine each evening).
Amen and Cheers,
