The Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund (HDSF) was founded in 1996 by Susie Kay, a former American Government teacher at H.D. Woodson High School in Washington, DC.
Since 1996, the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund (HDSF) has helped send 920 students to college through the combination of year-long college and career prep programs and awarding of over 1,805 new and renewal academic college scholarships.
Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund offers students a unique opportunity to develop relationships with local professionals, receive academic scholarships, build networks, and access resources that will help enrich lives. Most of these students are the first in their family to attend college and come from very challenging social and economic circumstances.

The organization began as a one-day a 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament to raise money for academic college scholarships for Kay's students. Under Kay’s leadership, along with a committed group of dedicated volunteers and supporters with a small staff, HDSF works year-round as a not-for-profit organization to empower D.C. public high school youth to find their best pathways to college, career, and life success. HDSF strives to prepare students for life by “building bridges of success” and “empowering the pursuit of dreams."
